Copa bound for Brazil pending Columbian appeal

The Copa America is almost certain to be awarded to Brazil unless a last ditch appeal by Colombia to keep the tournament is successful. The competition was taken away from Colombia after the kidnapping of tournament director Hernan Mejia Campuzano on Monday.

Campuzano was freed yesterday after being taken hostage near the town of Pereira, and he immediately appealed for Colombia to be reinstated as hosts. Officials have until tomorrow to convince the Confederation of South American Football (CSF) that their country is a safe venue for the event.

The president of Colombia, Andres Pastrana, sent a statement to the CFS urging them to reconsider Thursday's decision to move the Copa. He insisted: "Taking away the Copa America from Colombia is the biggest terrorist act."

The Venezuelan Football Federation have confirmed that Brazil will be the new hosts after Peru, Venezuela and Argentina declined the opportunity, the latter currently hosting the FIFA World Youth Championships.
