Newcastle's Kieron Dyer has begun the long road to full fitness but is adamant that he will be back in the first-team within a few weeks of the start of the new season. The England international underwent surgery on his shins last February and yesterday began his first work-out with Newcastle's physiotherapists in his battle to return to the game as quickly as possible. Although Dyer had hoped to be back in contention before the new season gets underway in August, he has now admitted it is more likely he will return to the Magpies line-up towards the beginning of September.
"I will be running for the first time today and this is a big step forward for me," he explained yesterday. "But even before I start I am extremely confident that everything will be going to plan. I hope to play some part in Robert Lee's testimonial on August 11 if only for five or 10 minutes. However, to tell the truth I don't know if I will manage to play in any of the preceding games and while I could be fit for the start of the new season I'll not be as sharp as I would like to be, so we will just have to wait and see," he added.
