Veron rumoured for Manchester United

Lazio's Argentinian midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron is close to signing for Manchester United, it has been reported. Veron would move for a fee in the region of £25million. The report said that the influential midfielder's agent had finalised the deal with Lazio directors yesterday and would now leave for England to tie up the Manchester side of the agreement. Both clubs have refused to comment on the proposed move.

Veron has become available at a knock-down price after a bogus passport scandal. Veron will go on trial with several others, including Lazio president Sergio Cragnotti, on October 11 for alleged irregularities in documents submitted when he applied for an Italian passport. United would break their own British transfer record of £19m for striker Ruud Van Nistelrooy from PSV Eindhoven if the deal goes ahead.
