United plan Ferguson negotiations

Manchester United have announced that they have planned negotiations with manager Alex Ferguson over his contract and a future role with the club after next season. United released a statement today which read: "The board of Manchester United plc announces that it will be entering into negotiations this week with Sir Alex Ferguson and his advisors to agree a renumeration package which will enhance the terms of his current contract with Manchester United, which terminates on June 30, 2002."

A consultancy agreement between Manchester United and Ferguson that will begin on July 1, 2002, is also being negotiated. What role Ferguson will be offered at the club is not clear and it will be one of the issues that will be discussed during the negotiations but the club insist that Ferguson will have not control over his eventual successor, whatever his position will be.

This latest announcement comes just two weeks after Ferguson threatened to cut all ties with the club when his contract ends next year after United offered him only a part-time role with small remuneration when he stepped down as manager. His revelation caused outrage among supporters and shareholders alike and it looks like his threats have worked as the club now prepare to offer the Scot a better proposition to keep him at United after next summer.
