McClaren not heading to West Ham

English premier league West Ham United appear to have given up the chase to sign Manchester United assistant manager Steve McClaren as their new team boss. West Ham managing director Paul Aldridge was quoted on the club's official website today as saying that McClaren was now talking with premier league rivals Middlesbrough.

"It looks like Steve won't be coming after all," he said. "We were due to meet him again today but he has told us he is going back to talk to Middlesbrough. It's disappointing but a factor must be that he doesn't have to move his family down to London."

West Ham are looking for a manager to replace Harry Redknapp, who left the London club on May 9. Former England manager Terry Venables is still undecided about his future at Middlesbrough.

West Ham are now likely to go back after Charlton's Alan Curbishley. (Reuters)
