Leeds were held to a goalless draw at Elland Road this evening by Valencia in an exciting first leg of the semi-final of the Champions League. David O'Leary's side now faces a tricky task in Spain if they are to face either Real Madrid or Bayern Munich on May 23 in the final, although tonight's home leg clean sheet could be significant.
A brilliant save by Santiago Canizares kept last year's beaten finalists in the tie when he flung himself across the goal line to block Dominic Matteo's header in the 51st minute. Leeds midfielder Lee Bowyer later struck the bar with another header. Republic of Ireland defender Ian Harte had a free kick saved in the opening minutes and Alan Smith headed wide of an empty net in the first half.
Valencia also came close as a looping header from midfielder Gaizka Mendieta came back off the bar. Leeds keeper Nigel Martyn shut out John Carew and Juan Sanchez in the first half with flying saves. Rio Ferdinand had to clear off the line in the final minute after the ball bounced over a helpless Martyn.
David O'Leary is confident that Leeds can score a vital away goal in Valencia. He said: "I do believe that on our day we are a side who can score an away goal and it's amazing how an away goal can change everything." The winner of the second leg will face either Bayern Munich or holders Real Madrid in the final.
