The FA Premier League have unveiled Barclaycard as the new sponsor of the English Premiership. The card services company will take over from current sponsors Carling, whose three-year deal runs out this summer. Barclaycard will pay £48million over three years to secure their place as main sponsor, with the league to be re-named the FA Barclaycard Premiership from next season.
The decision followed a meeting today of the FA Premier League clubs, who unanimously agreed the new deal. The new deal represents a 33% increase for the FA, who received the then record sum of £36million from the brewing giants for their highly successful three year partnership. Richard Scudamore, chief executive of the league, confirmed this evening: "This is an exceptionally good deal for both parties. This is a great opportunity for the league and Barclaycard to build on each other's strength and growing reputation throughout the world."
Barclaycard chief executive Bob Potts mirrored Scudamore's sentiments, adding: "The Premiership will be the platform to take our business into a league of its own. This is the kind of significant strategic investment which we have been looking to make for some time."
