Best 'improving' after consultants visit

George Best was considering his immediate future again today, after arranging further hospital tests because of his on-going liver problems. The Manchester United legend visited his consultant yesterday amid fears that he had started drinking again.

Professor Roger Williams, a liver-disease specialist, said Best's health had improved and arrangements were being made for the 54-year-old star to undergo additional treatment at London's Cromwell Hospital, in the next few weeks. Best, who underwent extensive treatment for liver damage last year, had been warned by doctors that even one more drink could be fatal.

Cromwell Hospital spokesman Geoffrey Brandon issued a statement on behalf of Prof Williams confirming that the star's health had been reviewed. It read: "Mr Best's health has improved and arrangements are being made for additional treatment over the next few weeks. Further tests are being carried out and when more is known the hospital will provide further information."

Mr Brandon confirmed that Best had just had a brief visit to the hospital. Concern for the ailing star's health mounted last week with Best's agent Phil Hughes saying he was worried sick after the former football great had been unmistakably drunk during telephone conversations in recent days.

Best, whose wayward lifestyle cut short a glittering playing career, recently cancelled a number of engagements including an interview with Michael Parkinson. In February, he spent 10 days in hospital undergoing treatment for pneumonia. (PA)
