Hughes doubtful for Bulgaria clash

Aaron Hughes could be doubtful for Northern Ireland's World Cup qualifier against Bulgaria after he picked up a calf injury in training today. Hughes felt his calf at the start of Northern Ireland's first training session in Sofia and sat out the rest of the session.

The Newcastle defender is receiving treatment from physio Terry Hayes and manager Sammy McIlroy hopes he will be able to train in the morning.

“He just felt his calf during the session and he spent the rest of the session receiving treatment,” McIllroy said in an interview with PA. “Terry's looking after him now and we're training again in the morning. Hopefully he will be all right by then.”

Jim Magilton also missed the session, which was changed from the Levski Stadium to CSKA Sofia's training ground at the last minute. The Ipswich midfielder was still feeling his hamstring after the team's three-and-a-half hour flight from Belfast today. (PA)
