Rangers edge closer as Celtic await Cup final

Robert Malcolm scored an 89th minute winner to edge Rangers three points closer to Scottish Premier League leaders Celtic with victory over Motherwell at Fir Park Saturday. Rangers are now on 66 points from 30 games and 13 behind Celtic with just eight games left.

The victory may be vital in Rangers battle with Hibernian for the second Champions League spot, with Celtic almost out of sight at the top of the league table. Hibs lost 2-1 at Dunfermline to remain on 60 points from 31 games.

Rangers looked set for a third defeat inside a week - following their Scottish Cup exit at Dundee United and a home defeat to Dundee in the league - when they went behind after two minutes.

Motherwell striker Don Goodman headed home a free-kick from Moroccan international Said Chiba, who was making his debut.

However Rangers manager Dick Advocaat sent on Fabrice Fernandes after 58 minutes and the French midfielder scored with his first touch after only arriving at Ibrox on Thursday in a new loan deal.

Motherwell's inexperienced defence then allowed Malcolm to stab the ball in from close range with a minute left after Fernandes's corner had been hooked back by Tore Andre Flo.
