Aldridge resigns from Tranmere top job

John Aldridge has resigned as manager of Tranmere Rovers after the side's 3-2 defeat to Barnsley today. Tranmere had been 2-0 up at half-time before a second half turn around that leaves them at the bottom of the English First Division. The club's official website reported the acceptance of the resignation by the board of directors.

Aldridge joined Tranmere in 1991 before becoming player-manager in 1996. Last season he brought the club to the Worthington Cup final where they were defeated by Martin O'Neill's Leicester.

Assistant manager, and Aldridge's former Republic of Ireland international team-mate Kevin Sheedy took the spotlight at the post-match press conference and will manage the side against Gillingham next Tuesday.
