An eircom League committee is to investigate the possibility of summer football at a meeting on March 5th. The decision was made at last night's gathering of the League's Board of Control, where it was decided the options open to the league warranted a separate summit before being recommended at this year's AGM in May.
With a record number of fixtures falling victim to the elements this winter, football chiefs believe it is time to seriously consider the advantages of a change in season, which would see the revised league run from March to November. With players, managers, officials and fans voicing their support for the change, a growing number of the 22 clubs are believed to be anxious to give summer soccer a two-three year trial.
However, a decision will not be made until the recommendations are approved by a majority of the country's 22 league clubs at this year's AGM.
