New England boss Sven Goran Eriksson has revealed he will implement an alcohol ban in the lead up to international matches. The England squad's drink-related escapades have frequently made the front pages of the tabloids under previous regimes but Eriksson is adamant that he will instill a serious work ethic within his squad.
During an interview on BBC's Breakfast with Frost, Eriksson revealed: "If you play for England you don't need to drink wine or beer with your meals. We are together to play football, not for anything else. I am a Swede, so I am used to alcohol myself. But if you are a professional footballer you have to behave like a professional footballer, especially if you want to play for England," he warned.
Eriksson also indicated on the programme that he intends to use the 4-4-2 system when England take on Spain at Villa Park later this month. "I believe in a back four. I have always played like that, and there are very few times when I have chosen to play with three central defenders. I think we will start with four at the back. Many years ago, when I was younger, I chose my tactics first and then put in the players. But I have changed over the years. You have to pick the best players you can find and then choose your tactics - most important are the players," he said.
