Derek Mountfield sacked from Cork City

Derek Mountfield is believed to have told his Cork City players that he is leaving the club which he joined on a two year contract just over 6 months ago. The former Everton defender who won League and FA Cup winners medals in 1984 and 1985 has been under pressure since Cork bowed out of the FAI Cup losing at home to Longford two weeks ago. It is understood club directors asked him to step down after losing at home to Shamrock Rovers last Wednesday, a request which the 37-year-old turned down.

But after Cork were trashed four nil by St Patricks Athletic yesterday it now appears it was the final straw in the Englishman’s spell in League of Ireland football. His assistant manager Liam Murphy is expected to take up the reigns for the remainder of this season.
