Jaap Stam today revealed he wants to stay with Manchester United for the rest of his career. The 28-year-old Dutch international defender made a winning return to first-team action on Saturday at Bradford, following surgery on an Achilles injury in September.
“I don't see another club being a step up. I would love to play out my career at Old Trafford - you feel you are making history here,” Stam told the club’s official website.
Meanwhile United have confirmed they could choose a foreign coach to replace Sir Alex Ferguson as manager. The Scot will retire from the position next season and United's communications director Patrick Harveson admitted the club may follow the example of the Football Association and appoint someone from overseas.
“We would not narrow our search when the time comes to any one country. We're looking for the best possible successor and we'd be foolish to do otherwise,” Harveson said.
Harveson also admitted United have yet to start contract negotiations with either top scorer Teddy Sheringham or David Beckham. “We're talking to a number of players but we usually leave negotiations until the end of the season.”
And Harveson was keen to pour scorn on talk United have booked hotels in anticipation at reaching the Champions League and FA Cup finals. He told BBC Radio 5 Live: “We haven't booked a hotel in the Cardiff area for the FA Cup final. We'd wait until the semi-final stage, after we've got through the quarter-finals, before planning that. I'm new to the club - but we certainly won't be booking it before then.”
