Soccer: Sheringham set for Cup action

Teddy Sheringham is in line to figure against Fulham in the FA Cup after making a successful comeback from injury for Manchester United. The 34-year-old striker could be on the bench for Sunday's third-round tie at Craven Cottage after he scored in the 4-4 friendly draw with Wrexham last night. Jaap Stam and Andy Cole also made their comebacks following their Achilles operations, while Mark Bosnich made his return from surgery on his hernia.

Sheringham, who has missed United's last five games with hamstring trouble, played just over 60 minutes, as planned, before coming off. United's first-team coach Jimmy Ryan, who was in charge at the Racecourse Ground in the absence of Sir Alex Ferguson and Steve McClaren, felt the striker was ready.

"I think Fulham could be a possibility and we will wait and see if there is a reaction, but I can't imagine that there will be," he said. "It was nice for Teddy to get a goal and it's his season for scoring goals."

Stam and Cole each played half a game and Ryan claimed everyone had come through unscathed. He said he was delighted with the quality of the work-out.

"It all went according to plan," he said. "It was just what we wanted, in fact probably better. The first half was played at a good tempo and we wanted to give them something more than just training, so it was excellent.

"It's another step for all of them and really I think they are all pretty close now."
