David Beckham has given Manchester United a clear indication that he will sign a new contract with the Premiership champions. The gifted midfielder's current deal runs out in the summer of 2003, but Beckham says in his new video: “If I am happy and my family are happy then I will stay where I am, if things go well with the club and the contract. I will have to wait and see over the next few months if the club talks to me.”
United captain Roy Keane is the top earner at Old Trafford with a £52,000-a-week contract that dwarfs the pay packets of Beckham, Paul Scholes, Fabien Barthez, Ryan Giggs and Jaap Stam. Old Trafford deputy chief executive David Gill told The Express: “We have several players with two and four years left on their contracts and our policy is to negotiate two years before a contract ends. We intend to reach agreement with our key players but we don't negotiate during the season.”
