There was double disappointment for Manchester United in last night’s Worthington Cup tie when they lost 2-1 to Sunderland and also had Dwight Yorke sent off. Although United put out their second string side, Dwight Yorke gave United an early advantage in the 31st minute, but his evening was to turn rapidly sour as, after Julio Arca had levelled with a 75th-minute header, he was sent-off for a high tackle on Emerson Thome. There was worse was to follow in extra-time when Kevin Phillips claimed his first goal in eight games from the penalty spot after defender John O'Shea had been adjudged to have pulled him back.
Elsewhere, Ipswich beat Coventry 2-1 while the award for the most eventful game goes to Crystal Palace and Tranmere. The sides finished level after 90 minutes, extra time failed to resolve the issue with Palace eventually winning 6-5 on penalties.
