Soccer: Cantona sought as manager

Struggling Olympique Marseille may turn to Eric Cantona to solve their problems, according to a report in today’s edition of the tabloid Le Parisien. The newspaper stated that the majority shareholder, Robert Louis-Dreyfus, asked Cantona to consider becoming manager of the best-supported club in France, which is in danger of relegation for the second straight season. Marseille-born Cantona, 34, is being considered as a replacement for team manager Eric di Meco and sporting director Marcel Dib, the newspaper said, without quoting a source. Cantona played 45 times for France, scoring 20 goals, and played for Auxerre (twice), Marseille (twice), Bordeaux, Montpellier, Nimes, Leeds United and Manchester United.

The extrovert forward, once banned for attacking a spectator when playing for Manchester United, won two French league titles, and five English league titles, one with Leeds and four with Manchester United. He also won two FA Cup winners' medals with Manchester United, before quitting the sport in 1997. He has recently been playing beach soccer in addition to carving a career as an actor.
