Celtic have confirmed that midfielder Morten Wieghorst has been taken to hospital with a mystery brain bug. The 29-year-old Danish international has been suffering from a virus, which affects the brain nerve endings and has been admitted to Glasgow's Southern General after complaining of dizzy spells and flu-like symptoms.
A spokesman for the club revealed, “As a result of a recent viral infection, Morten Wieghorst has developed neurological complications. He has been admitted to hospital for treatment. Since admission to hospital his condition has been stable. Tests are ongoing and his situation will be monitored closely.”
Wieghorst has been battling back to fitness after five months out with a knee injury and this is a massive setback for the player. The midfielder was an integral part of Celtic's championship-winning side in 1998 and earned a deserved place in Denmark's World Cup squad in the same year. But he suffered a cruciate knee injury which forced him to miss the last nine months of season 1998-99 before coming back only to be crocked again.
Former Celtic striker Darren Jackson was sidelined for three months in 1998 after undergoing major surgery on the brain condition hydrocephalus, and Wieghorst will be hoping his illness is less serious. (PA)
