Soccer: Galatasaray win super cup on golden goal

Brazilian striker Jardel scored a golden goal 13 minutes into extra time as UEFA Cup holders Galatasaray stunned eight times European champions Real Madrid to record a 2-1 win in the European Supercup on Friday. The teams had been level at 1-1 after both scored penalties in regulation time.

Jardel, the Turkish side's close-season signing from Porto, opened the scoring after 41 minutes after Real defender Ivan Campo bundled into Hakan Unsal in the penalty area. The Austrian referee pointed to the spot and Jardel, who scored five goals in a Turkish league game last weekend and a Champions League penalty in midweek, easily netted the spot kick.

Real fielded only five of the team who started their European Cup final win over Valencia in May and suffered from a lack of cohesion until Raul netted the equaliser from the spot after 79 minutes. A Savio cross was controversially adjudged to have been handled by defeder Korkmaz Bulent as it sped into the box.

Savio hit the post for Real with time running out but the game went into 30 minutes of extra time and Jardel swept home the winner after a fine low cross from defender Gheorghe Popescu. (PA)
