The millionaire owner of Blackburn Rovers FC, Jack Walker, has died at the age of 71 from cancer. Walker, who made his millions in the steel industry, took over Blackburn in 1991 after he retired and turned the club into Premiership winners within four years, using his millions to capture the SAS strike force of Alan Shearer and Chris Sutton, and several other top players. He also transformed Rovers' Ewood Park ground, spending over £20 million on the new stadium. It is believed he had a personal fortune of about £600 million. He died at his home in Jersey on Thursday.
The Football Assocation's chairman, Steve Double has paid tribute to Mr Walker. "He was a fantastic servant of the game and the achievements of Blackburn over the 90s are testament to the man. Without Jack Walker the club would not have reached the heights it did," said Double.
