Leeds United have beaten 1860 Munich 2-1 in the first leg of the third qualifying round of the Champions' League tonight. However, manager David O'Leary will not be happy that his side let in Munich for a vital away goal in the dying seconds of the match. Leeds opened the scoring after 39 minutes through Alan Smith who capitalised on a poor clearance by the Munich keeper Daniel Hoffmann. Two minutes later, Munich were down to ten men after the Cypriot referee Costas Kapitanis sent off former QPR midfielder Zelic for what he viewed as a bad tackle on Ian Harte.
Leeds maintained their slender lead until the 71st minute when they went 2-0 up thanks to a bad refereeing decision gave them a penalty, which was converted by Harte. But four minutes later, Leeds themselves were down to ten men when Olivier Dacourt, making his debut at Elland Road, saw red after two bookable offences. Ten minutes later, David O'Leary had his head in his hands again when another member of his team saw red. This time, Norwegian midfielder Eirik Bakke was the player heading for an early bath. But worse was yet to come for the Leeds boss when Munich managed to pull one back through Agostino in injury time. Leeds travel to Germany for the second leg in a fortnight's time.
Meanwhile, Glasgow Rangers have beaten Herfolge of Denmark 3-0 away in their first leg of this third qualifying round. Although Rangers have not played their best so far in the Scottish Premier League, tonight things went perfectly. They were one-up after 28 minutes thanks to a long-range effort from Jorg Albertz. Less than three minutes later, they added another when Rod Wallce struck home an easy tap-in. Rangers never looked in danger of losing their lead and extended it even further on the hour with a magnificent free-kick from Lorenzo Amoruso. Tonight's result makes Rangers the clear favourite in this tie to reach the first group phase of the Champions' League when they entertain Herfolge in a fortnight.
