Police, mindful of problems when massive crowds swamped the Champs Elysees as France won the 1998 World Cup, have announced measures to be taken on Sunday when France meet Italy in the Euro 2000 final. Parking will be banned from shortly after midday in a large area including the Champs Elysees and traffic will be barred from 21:00 local time with fans being urged to use public transport.
Police will be out in force to avoid incidents both around the Champs Elysees and in the area near town hall where a giant screen will be set up for the public to watch the match which is taking place in Rotterdam.
Two years ago, one person was killed and dozens injured during a series of incidents amid celebrations of France's 3-0 win over Brazil in the World Cup final. The fatality occurred when a woman driver ploughed into pedestrians as she tried to extract her vehicle from the crowds.
