In what was an absolute cracking game that brought the fans to their feet, Bohemians defeated Cork City on penalties after the game had ended 2-2 in normal time as part of the FAI's new Super Cup. The Cup itself had come in for some stick before the game, as some saw it as far too early to prepare teams for their European encounters.

A Declan Daly own goal had given Bohemians the lead after just eight minutes and they held that lead until just after half-time, when one of the new young 'finds', Joe Gamble levelled the scores. A Crowe penalty on 70 minutes and a fantastic 25 yard curler from another star of the future, Damien Delaney, after 83 minutes, left the scores level at the end of normal time, and in the ensuing penalty shoot-out it was Cork man Pat Morley who missed leaving Bohemians the winners 5-4 on penalties.

In the other match, an Eamon McLoughlin goal after 27 minutes followed by one from Aidan Lynch in the 92nd minute saw UCD truimph over Shelbourne.
