Euro 2000: Portuguese manager quits

Portuguese coach Humberto Coelho resigned following his team's 2-1 extra time defeat to France in last night's Euro 2000 semi final. The game ended in controversy when the referee awarded a last gasp penalty, which Zidane gratefully accepted.

A torrent of abuse was then directed at the linesman who spotted the handball by Xavier (the referee was unsighted) it was a brave decision by the linesman and the Portuguese players might want to send him a letter of apology after they see the action replay of the incident. Nuno Gomez was sent off after the final whistle while other Portuguese players can count themselves lucky not to follow.

So the French march forward to meet the winner of tonight's intriguing semi between Holland and Italy, while the Portuguese dream is over but their footballing reputation is greatly enhanced.
