Soccer: Sheffield Wednesday appoint Jewell as manager

Paul Jewell is the man handed the task of reviving the fortunes of Sheffield Wednesday following their relegation last season. Jewell has been appointed as the new Wednesday manager, having signed a three-year deal at Hillsborough. Bradford yesterday gave their Yorkshire rivals permission to speak to the Liverpudlian, and Wednesday chairman Howard Culley sealed the deal this morning.

Jewell quit Bradford over the weekend claiming he had lost his enthusiasm for the job. He kept the Bantams in the top flight with a last game win over Liverpool, while Wednesday lost their Premiership status. Richmond gave Wednesday permission to approach Jewell after he realised that he could not persuade him to stay at Valley Parade, despite two successful years in charge, including promotion to the Premiership 12 months ago. The Bantams chairman initially refused to accept Jewell's resignation and placed him on paid leave. Richmond was determined Bradford would not miss out on compensation for their boss, who had two years left on his contract. His stance paid off, with Wednesday now due to pay Bradford compensation having given Jewell the job.
