Rangers midfielder Tugay Kerimoglu has been thrown out of Turkey's squad after reacting badly to his substitution in last night's Euro 2000 victory against Belgium. Tugay, taken off eight minutes before half-time, threw his shirt to the ground as he walked off the pitch during the 2-0 win.
The coach said that he had shown a lack of respect for the team, said team spokesman Turgay Yarbar today. Tugay raced to the dressing rooms as soon as he was taken off but has since pleaded for forgiveness from coach Mustafa Denizli.
‘I shouldn't have done this and I plead forgiveness with my trainer,’ he told Turkish news agency Anatolia. Tugay joined Rangers in a £1.3million deal earlier this year but has threatened to leave Ibrox after failing to establish himself in Dick Advocaat's side.
Meanwhile, UEFA are to take no action against Turkey for the violence which accompanied their passage into the last eight of Euro 2000 in Brussels last night. Turkish supporters fought running battles in the streets after their 2-0 victory over hosts Belgium, with English supporters among those who came under attack.
