Euro 2000: Matthaus will be fit to play

Veteran sweeper Lothar Matthaus will be fit to play in Germany's opening Euro 2000 match against Romania on Sunday, despite again injuring a thigh in a friendly against Liechtenstein, which Germany won 8-2. Germany's team doctor said, “There is no problem. Lothar can play, his substitution was simply a precautionary measure.”

The 39-year-old former skipper tore a muscle in his right thigh 11 days ago, but it was muscle tightness on the other leg which ended his participation in the Liechtenstein game after just 30 minutes. Matthaus said that he would start training again today, when the Germans get to their headquarters at Vaals in the Netherlands.
