Soccer: Van Nistelrooy transfer on hold

Manchester United are desperately trying to save Ruud van Nistelrooy's record £19million transfer after the striker failed a fitness test. United dramatically put the deal on hold last night because they were not satisfied with the results of tests on the Dutch striker's injured knee. Van Nistelrooy has not played for seven weeks after he damaged his medial ligaments attempting an overhead kick in a friendly for PSV Eindhoven against Silkeborg. The newly-crowned Premiership champions are now carrying out further tests in an attempt to salvage the deal.

United have agreed terms with PSV and Van Nistelrooy, and are hopeful that the transfer will be completed in the next few days. United had called a press conference yesterday at Old Trafford, where they expected to parade the most expensive player in the history of British football. However David Gill, who is United's financial director appeared, accompanied by club solicitor and director Maurice Watkins, to say that the transfer is on hold.
