Everton and Liverpool finished goalless in controversial circumstances when the referee Graham Poll disallowed a stoppage time winner for the Blues. With the seconds ticking away Liverpool keeper Sander Westerveld took a free-kick which rebounded off Everton's Don Hutchinson into the empty net. The referee ruled he had blown for full-time as Westerveld kicked the ball.
The match was full of commitment from both sets of players but was short on class. Both teams defended better than they attacked and there was some good news for Liverpool with Robbie Fowler coming on as substitute for his first senior appearance since scoring as a substitute against Wimbledon on December 28.
The result means Manchester United can clinch the title if they beat Southampton at The Dell tomorrow.
