UEFA have charged Leeds United with failing to control their players in the first leg of their UEFA Cup semi-final against Galatasaray last week. Europe's ruling body is still silent on what action they will take over the murders of Leeds fans Chris Loftus and Kevin Speight in Istanbul on the eve of the match last week.
But they have moved swiftly to crack down on David O'Leary's young side for having four players booked in the 2-0 defeat in Turkey. Harry Kewell, Matthew Jones, Lee Bowyer and Ian Harte were all cautioned. Leeds secretary Ian Silvester says, "I was astounded to receive this notification from UEFA. But apparently there is a rule you can be charged with failing to control your players if more than three are booked in the same game". The matter will be dealt with at a disciplinary meeting on the 27th April.
UEFA will come to their second-leg verdict on Friday afternoon, after postponing it today. It is thought Elland Road could stage the game, though UEFA president Lennart Johansson is hinting Galatasaray's 1,700 fans could be allowed entry. Leeds want no Turkish fans present.
