Soccer: Liverpool 1 - 1 Sunderland

Emile Heskey made an impressive debut for Liverpool today following his £11million move from Leicester and had a hand in their opening goal after just three minutes with Patrik Berger scoring from the spot. But an equaliser from Kevin Philips for Sunderland with 13 minutes to go, denied him the bonus of a victory in his first game.

Liverpool's Carragher and Sunderland's Thirwell were both booked by referee Graham Poll with the official jumping in to separate the feuding pair. Sami Hyypia linked up with the attack in the 75th minute only to see his shot from the edge of the area go narrowly over the top. Michael Owen got another run-out when he replaced Meijer in the 73rd minute but four minutes later Sunderland drew level and salvaged a point. Phillips scored from the spot after he had been brought down by the keeper for his 25th goal of the season.
