The Football League will mark the death of Sir Stanley Matthews with a minute's silence before every game this weekend. The England legend, who died yesterday aged 85, will also have his memory honoured before the Worthington Cup final between Leicester and Tranmere at Wembley on Sunday. The former double European Footballer of the Year winner – and also the first man to receive the honour – played 54 times for England and was the first footballer to be knighted for his services to the game. A minutes silence was observed in Stoke today as a sign of respect to the man who joined Stoke City at 15-years-old and turned professional at 17.
