There were more FA cup shocks today as two Premiership clubs crashed out to lower division opposition. Charlton came from two down to stun Coventry, with Andy Hunt getting a late winner. Gillingham turned in a superb second half display to heap further misery on premiership strugglers Sheffield Wednesday. Bolton recovered from an early scare to dispose of Cambridge at the Abbey Stadium, while Tranmere’s amazing season continues with ex-Ireland international David Kelly coming off the bench to score the winner at Fulham. Everton advanced to the sixth round but struggled to break the deadlock against Preston until David Unsworth crashed home a free kick.

Manchester United returned to the top of the Premiership with a scrappy win over Middlesbrough. United were on top for most of the game but met with resolute defending from Bryan Robson’s side. Christian Ziege was sent off after the hour for a foul on Beckham, but it looked like it might be Middlesbrough’s day when Juninho earned a penalty. However the little Brazilian had his effort saved by Bosnich and United rallied. Their intense pressure finally paid off with three minutes left as Beckham got the winner.
