Roy Keane got the goal that gave Manchester United their 1-0 Intercontinental cup win over Palmeiras of Brazil at Tokyo's National Stadium yesterday and the right, until next month's new FIFA tournament anyway, to call themselves world club champions.
Ryan Giggs, who was voted 'Man of the Match' by the Japanese Press to win a new sports car, outpaced defender Junior Baiano wide on the left in a swift counter-attack to set up Keane's goal. Goalkeeper Marcos flapped at Giggs' cross, leaving the Corkman to sweep the ball into an empty net 35 minutes into the game. The decisive strike came during a period when Palmeiras were in almost total control.
The game started slowly but developed into quite a thriller. Palmeiras went close to scoring several times in the second half with Alex spurning the best chance when he headed wide with Bosnich to beat. Eleven minutes from time Bosnich brilliantly turned another drive from Alex over his bar to finish off what must be his best performance in United shirt to date.
