Newcastle today agreed to pay Kenny Dalglish compensation for sacking him as manager more than a year ago. The figure is being kept secret but Dalglish, now Celtic's director of football operations, said in a statement that he was happy with the outcome of the tribunal, which was arbitrated by the Premier League.
“I am pleased that everything has been resolved amicably”, said Dalglish, who has been chasing compensation since being replaced as manager at St James' Park by Ruud Gullit last year.
“I'd like to thank the players and staff who worked with me at Newcastle for
their support and dedication. I would also like to thank John Barnwell of the League Managers' Association and my trade union, MSF, who supported my claim. I wish Bobby Robson and the Newcastle team every success and look forward to concentrating on fulfilling the ambitions of Celtic for the future”.
Dalglish and Newcastle issued a joint statement outside the Premier League headquarters with both camps saying they were satisfied with the outcome.
“Kenny Dalglish and Newcastle United Football Club want to announce that they have reached an agreement to the satisfaction of both parties on the legal matters relating to Kenny Dalglish's departure from the club”, read the statement. “The terms of the agreement will remain confidential and no further comment will be made”.
The outcome means a financial settlement has been reached with the former
Newcastle boss, although only Magpies chief executive Freddie Fletcher was at the hearing.
