Mark Allen didn't need to be at his best to advance past Poland's Antoni Kowalski and reach the third round of the World Open in China on Tuesday, with the Antrim man failing to register a break over 50 in his 5-2 victory.

Kowalski made a bright start in Yushan and took the first two frames, recording a break of 128 in the opener.

However, that was as good as it got for the world number 72, who ground to a halt in the subsequent frames.

Aaron Hill was involved in a far more high-quality encounter against Gary Wilson, but exited the tournament as his English opponent prevailed 5-4.

Breaks of 68 and 78 had the Cork man in a 2-0 lead, but Wilson replied with knocks of 136 and 81 to level matters.

Hill restored his two-frame lead with breaks of 116 and 57, and had the chance to wrap up victory in the eighth frame when breaking down on a knock of 67, but Wilson's experience ultimately helped him across the finish line.

Tournament favourite Judd Trump was a 5-1 winner over Austria's Florian Nuessle, while Ronnie O'Sullivan whitewashed Ishpreet Singh Chadha.

Mark Selby and Barry Hawkins also came out on the wrong side of 5-0 verdicts against Michael Holt and Ian Burns, on a day when defending champion John Higgins was edged out by 19-year-old Stan Moody on a 5-4 scoreline.
