Aaron Hill and Robbie McGuigan book Welsh Open places

WUHAN, CHINA - OCTOBER 07: Aaron Hill of Ireland chalks the cue in the second round match against Kyren Wilson of England on day 2 of 2024 Wuhan Open (Snooker) at China Optics Valley Convention & Exhibition Centre on October 7, 2024 in Wuhan, Hubei Provin
Aaron Hill is up to 42 in the provisional world rankings

Aaron Hill and Robbie McGuigan both secured their places in next month's Welsh Open in Llandudno with victories on Saturday.

Hill was pushed closest and had to show all of his battling qualities to come back twice before beating Cheung Ka Wai 4-3.

The Hongkonger led 2-0 and 3-2, but the Cork man didn't give up, taking the last two frames. The decider was tense, with Hill establishing a lead, only to give Cheung a chance, before he missed the brown.

From there, Hill potted brown, blue and pink to go through.

It was more straightforward for McGuigan, who impressed in seeing off Daniel Wells 4-1.

Wells is nearly 50 places ahead of the Antrim man in the world rankings, so this was a welcome surprise victory. It included breaks of 74 and 50.

Elsewhere on Saturday, Jordan Brown lost out 4-1 to Gao Yang, while earlier in the qualifiers, there were defeats for Ken Doherty, Fergal Quinn and Leone Crowley.
