Ken Doherty missed out on a place at the German Masters after falling to a third round qualifying defeat to Stuart Bingham this afternoon.

The Dubliner had two encouraging victories in the previous 48 hours, defeating China's Wang Yuchen and Lyu Haotian on 5-4 scorelines.

Doherty made a 134 break in the win over Wang on Wednesday, but was no match for his fellow former world champion Bingham this afternoon in a 5-0 whitewash.

Jordan Brown also reached the third round and will play against world number 12 Wu Yize.

Most of the qualifying matches are played in Sheffield, with a selection of games involving higher seeds held over for when the event begins in Germany, meaning Brown won’t play again in the tournament until late January.

Robbie McGuigan was beaten by Oliver Lines in the second round, while both Fergal Quinn and Aaron Hill succumbed to Liam Highfield in the first and second stage respectively.

Leone Crowley lost 5-2 against Welsh player Liam Davies.

Mark Allen will take his place in the third round against McGuigan’s conqueror Lines later in January.

Allen and the rest of the top 16 are gearing up for the Masters tournament which begins in York on Sunday.

The field will include Ronnie O'Sullivan, with the seven-time world champion practicing in Celbridge this week in preparation for the tournament.

O'Sullivan will face Neil Robertson in a mouth-watering opening round match next Wednesday.

The Rocket has been staying on the east coast intermittently in the last couple of months while getting ready for UK tournaments.

He played with Hill and Brown in practice at Celbridge Snooker Club arranged by former player Fergal O'Brien.
