John Higgins got his Scottish Open campaign under way with a 4-2 win over Poland's Antoni Kowalski in Edinburgh.
Higgins, who won the last of his two Scottish Open titles in 1996, fired a break of 104 to progress on an opening day that was hit by a number of withdrawals.
Neil Robertson and Mark Williams were among those to pull out at short notice, joining the likes of Ronnie O’Sullivan and world number one Judd Trump in opting to miss the event.
Defending champion Lei Peifan advanced with a 4-3 win over Amir Sarkhosh, while Shaun Murphy also edged a deciding frame to beat Liu Hongyu.
Antrim duo Mark Allen and Robbie McGuigan are in action on Tuesday with Allen facing India's Ishpreet Chadha while youngster McGuigan has an eye-catching start against Mark Selby.
