Defending champion Mark Selby got his British Open campaign underway with a 4-1 win over David Grace in Cheltenham while Aaron Hill fell at the first hurdle.
Selby did not need to find top gear as he cruised home with two top breaks of 54 to bounce back from last week's English Open semi-final defeat to Zhou Yuelong.
John Higgins, whom Selby defeated in last year’s final, battled back from 3-1 down to edge out veteran Mark Davis in a final-frame decider to reach round two.
Neil Robertson rounded off a 4-0 whitewash of Alfie Davies with a century, while Judd Trump compiled two in a row as he beat Ireland’s Hill by the same score.
Other winners included Mark Williams, who saw off China’s Si Jiahui 4-2, and fellow former world champion Kyren Wilson, who was a 4-1 winner over Chris Wakelin.
