Aaron Hill's memorable run at the English Open has come to an end after falling to a 5-2 quarter-final defeat to Welshman Jak Jones.

The Corkman had aspirations of maintaining his momentum in the competition and made a flying start at the Brentwood Centre when he took the opening frame with a break of 73.

The 2024 World Championship runner-up Jones however reeled off three on the spin, including a break of 79 in the fourth to move into a solid lead.

Hill dug deep to take the fifth, but Jones wrapped things up in the next frame. Successive fouls allowed the Welshman to pick off a red and pink to take the frame 64-22.

It brings to an end a hugely positive tournament for the 24-year-old.

Hill began the tournament with a magical 147 in defeating Yao Pengchang, before backing that up with victory over world number 26 Stephen Maguire.

Ali Carter produced the fourth maximum of his career, but it was in vain as the Cork man prevailed 4-3, before Hill matched the best result of his professional career after beating Jack Lisowski 4-1 to reach the last-eight.

Mark Allen is involved in a rollercoaster of a quarter-final with Elliot Slessor. The 39-year-old appeared to be heading for a whitewash against the English player after losing the opening four frames, but turned the match on it's head to reel off the next four to send it to a decider.

Irish representation is in danger with Mark Allen losing the opening four frames of his quarter-final with Elliot Slessor. With no margin for error, the 39-year-old reeled off the next four frames to keep his interest alive, with the winner to face Jones in the last four.

Mark Selby - pictured above - is through to the semi-finals after a magnificent clearance of 131 in the deciding frame of his clash with Jackson Page.

The four-time world champion's second century of the evening sealed a 5-4 success to settle a contest lasting more than three hours.

Selby, who won the tournament in 2022, twice trailed world number 34 Page at the Brentwood Centre.

He levelled for a second time – at 3-3 – with a superb knock of 111 and then moved one frame away from victory, only for Welshman Page to ensure the contest went the distance with a break of 54.

China’s Zhou Yuelong awaits Selby in the last four after he battled back from 4-2 down to beat 2023 world champion Luca Brecel 5-4.

With Brecel, who lost to Selby in the 2022 final, on the brink of progression, Zhou produced breaks of 94 and 113 to level before edging a tense, 52-minute decider.
