Ali Carter produced a 147 break at the BetVictor English Open in Brentwood but slipped to a surprise 4-3 fourth-round defeat to Cork native Aaron Hill.

Hill, 45th in the rankings and who made a 147-break of his own earlier in the competition, fought back from 3-1 down to stun Carter and book his place in the last 16.

Carter nailed the fourth maximum of his career in the fourth frame to go 3-1 up, but Hill (23) hit back to take the next three and now faces Jack Lisowski, who defeated world champion Zhao Xintong 4-1.

"Ali's after nicking a few quid off me there," joked Hill afterwards, who will now share the prize for making a 147 with Carter.

"I said when he made the max, the only thing that can justify it is if I win the match," he told WST social media. "And luckily I did. I stuck in there from 3-1 behind.

"That win is well up there, one of the best of my career. To go 3-1 down against an opponent like Ali, he doesn't give you a sniff.

"So to come back and beat him, I'm delighted."

Antrim's Mark Allen just about kept former world champion Stuart Bingham at bay, needing a deciding frame to win 4-3 after leading 2-0 and 3-2. On Thursday, he will take on Ding Junhui, who comfortably dispatched Matthew Selt 4-1.

World number one Judd Trump hit back after losing the opening frame to beat Yuan Sijun 4-1 with scores of 101, 69 and 61, ensuring a comfortable win and a match against Elliot Slessor who defeated Gary Wilson 4-0.

Defending English Open champion Neil Robertson bowed out after losing 4-1 to Jackson Page, who will play Shaun Murphy in the last 16, while Mark Selby was in dominant form as he beat Scottish Open champion Lei Peifan 4-0.

Selby’s win earned him a tie against Wu Yize, a 4-2 winner against Chris Wakelin.

Three-time world champion Mark Williams slipped to a 4-1 defeat to Zhou Yuelong, whose win included a 136 break, and he now faces Barry Hawkins after a 4-0 victory over Tom Ford.
