Aaron Hill has continued his bright start to the new WST season by booking his spot at the Xi'an Grand Prix.

The Cork man wasn't at his best but did enough to see off China's Liu Wenwei by five frames to two in Leicester.

His top break this afternoon was just 53, but quickly asserted his authority on the match after losing the opening frame to lead 3-1 at the interval. Liu reduced the gap to the bare minimum before Hill took the two frames he needed.

The 23-year-old reached the last-16 of the Wuhan Open last month, following on from a last-48 appearance at the Saudi Arabia Masters.

He joins Mark Allen and Jordan Brown in the first round proper after the Antrim pair won qualifiers earlier in the week against Mitchell Mann and Oliver Brown respectively.

Ken Doherty lost out to Wales' Daniel Wells this afternoon on a 5-1 scoreline, while Robbie McGuigan was beaten by Scott Donaldson by the same score.

This weekend, Hill will look to qualify for the Northern Ireland Open in Belfast, which is the only WST event played on the island of Ireland.
