Xiao Guodong successfully defended his Wuhan Open title as he came from behind to beat Gary Wilson 10-9 in Saturday's final.

The Chinese player and home favourite battled back from 8-6 down at the Optics Valley Gymnasium to secure victory in a tight deciding frame.

Both players had opportunities to secure the title but Xiao, whose first attempt to get over the line stalled when his break reached 48, completed the job after Wilson missed a crucial red.

"Winning a first ranking title is hard, winning a second is even harder," said Xiao, whose two professional tournament victories have both come in this event.

"To be able to come back to this city and successfully defend the title really means a lot."

Xiao led 5-4 after a tight opening session, but Wilson levelled after a break of 118. Xiao restored his lead, however, the Englishman then took the next three with breaks including a 102 to build a cushion.

Xiao replied by winning three in succession himself, with a run of 103 along the way to edge within sight of victory, but Wilson forced the decider with a gritty 52.

"It’s not a great feeling," Wilson told the World Snooker Tour’s official website. "It is obviously a positive to get to a final again, but obviously when you get to a final you want to win and I’m very disappointed not to do it."

Xiao, whose efforts over the week also included a maximum break in the first round, will climb to eighth in the world rankings. Wilson will move to 16th, ousting former world champion Shaun Murphy from the top 16.
