Mark Allen was pushed to the brink in the first round of the Welsh Open by rising star Stan Moody, who hit two half-centuries to move into a 2-0 lead, and also sat one frame away from victory at 3-2.
But Antrim man Allen responded by levelling the match before a break of 67 proved enough to secure his passage into round two.
Defending champion Gary Wilson crashed out after a 4-3 defeat to Ishpreet Singh Chadha in Llandudno.
Wilson described his performance as "hideous" after losing the last two frames to serve up an impressive win for the Indian number one.
"It felt amazing to beat a three-time event winner," said Singh Chadha. "I am close to getting into the top 64 now which would be a great achievement in my first two seasons."
Mark Selby claimed a 4-2 win over Hayden Pinhey, while Neil Robertson reeled off four frames in a row to turn an early deficit into a 4-2 victory over Mark Davis.
