World number one Judd Trump suffered a shock defeat in the third round of the Welsh Open this afternoon, with Hossein Vafaei win 4-2 at the Celtic Manor Resort in Newport.

Trump had won his last 28 best of seven frame games but had not found top form this week.

He made breaks of 51 and 53 to take a 2-1 but struggled in the next two as Vafaei, nicknamed the Persian Prince, moved into a shock lead.

Vafaei made a break of 60 when 3-2 up, with Trump trying to rescue the situation when needing three snookers, and a long green sealed a memorable victory for the Iranian player.

Ronnie O'Sullivan was in outstanding form as he dispatched Martin Gould 4-0, including breaks of 70, 74 and a closing 138.

Elsewhere Northern Ireland's Jordan Brown continued his good week with a 4-3 success over Alexander Ursenbacher.

He will play Mark King in the last 16 this evening. A victory would equal his best-ever career performance of a quarter-final finish in the German Masters last year.

Mark Allen is also through to this evening's session after a 4-3 success over Scott Donaldson.
