World number one Judd Trump saw off Michael Holt 6-3 to move into the quarter-finals of the Players' Championship in Southport.

Trump opened up the first-round match with a clearance of 130 before edging 3-1 ahead of Holt, the 2020 Snooker Shoot Out champion, by the mid-session interval.

Holt, whose triumph in Watford last week over the short-format tournament was his first ranking title, reduced the deficit to 4-2 with a break of 128 and then trailed 5-3.

However, a run of 76 from the 'Ace in the Pack' saw Trump claim a decisive 10th frame to wrap up victory.

Earlier, Joe Perry had edged out world number two Neil Robertson 6-4, despite the Australian scoring three century breaks - including a 140 in the second frame.

In Tuesday's other evening match, world number eight Kyren Wilson was defeated 6-2 by Chinese player Yan Bingtao.

Scotland's John Higgins, meanwhile, saw off compatriot Graeme Dott 6-2 during the afternoon. He will go on to meet world champion Trump for a place in the semi-finals.
