Mark Selby showed further signs of returning to top form as he whitewashed Mark Williams 6-0 in the first round of the Players' Championship in Southport.

Selby has already won two ranking events this season and was in total control against the Welshman, an early break of 103 teeing him up for the most routine of wins.

The three-time world champion said: "I played really well from start to finish, and I hope I continue playing this way.

"In patches throughout the season and in certain matches, I'm playing as well as I can play. It's there but it's about doing it consistently."

Stephen Maguire recovered from a 4-2 deficit to edge Ding Junhui 6-5 and gain some measure of revenge for his defeat to the same player in the final of this season's UK Championship.
